What's the story behind Coco & Ginger?
Coco & Ginger started organically after the birth of our second daughter Ginger. I had been working for an American garment business in Bali but did not want to back to the inflexibility of that position. I was still interested in being creative so started making Ginger small dresses out of vintage batiks and special fabric finds. Mothers in my baby group gave me wonderful encouragement and I made some which they bought... it really just grew from there fuelled by my fabric shopping trips and what my girls like to wear.
What makes Coco & Ginger different?
Living in Bali and still having contact with so many skilled people is exciting. I will have an idea and with a bit of patience and networking will be able to find someone who has the skills to produce it. I am really trying to make a conscious effort to abide by the principals of fair trade and I develop relationships with the people I work with so its mutually beneficial. I think our product is unique... we do small runs and a lot of the details are handmade.
What inspires your designs?
First and foremost my girls Coco and Ginger of course! I develop new designs purely to satisfy Gingers whims. Our entire collection is named after little girls we know and that definitely comes to mind too. I love folk art and grew up in saris bought back from Indian trips, batik dresses and silk slips from the dress up box fossicked from Op Shops so I guess its a bit eclectic. A painting with a gorgeous colour combination or a page out of a french home magazine all find their way to my inspiration board... It's never ending really.
Any hints for Summer 2010?
Lots of floral prints some fun retro batik, floaty silks, beautiful white cut work dresses for special days and lots more hand stitch!
What's the most exciting fulfilling etc moment?
I definitely get a thrill seeing little girls in my collection. I still remember the first time I saw the sweetest little Italian girl wearing one of my dresses at a restaurant. I loved the thought of it traveling back across the world. I hope they are special enough to stand the test of time and to be passed on like the special dresses I keep for my girls. Retail wise, I was thrilled when Baby’s Got Style placed the first order as I just adore the site and love Daniela's style.
Are Coco & Ginger products available elsewhere?
We are working on it! Of course we sell in Bali but are about to supply to London. I also sell through the Aman resorts in Indonesia so you never know...
Do you have a fave product?
It's hard... I guess I love the simplicity and versatility of the Ginger dress... after they have grown out of it as a dress it can become a top. Also it's cool in summer and can be layered in winter to inject a little sweetness into a grey day.
How would you describe your own style?
I love dresses! They suit the climate that I live in. I love my Mexican dresses, I wear a lot of prints and caftans. I am a bag collector and have a huge collection of beach bags. I live in flip flops and have a rainbow ensemble which my eldest daughter is questioning...how many colours does one person need? Oh and I LOVE my sunglasses so important... the bigger the better.
What can't you live without?
My girls and wonderful husband, fantastic visits from my sisters and family, baby group, book club, sunscreen, Jurlique skin products and Jo Malone baths... walks on the beach, Sunday morning kids yoga, girlfriends and the odd glass of wine, lots of water, bowls full of gardenias and a house full of orchids, a cup of tea and a magazine, a good laugh and a good cry... do I have to stop? I could keep listing all night.
As a child what did you want to be?
Coco my eldest daughter just asked me this question today! At first an early childhood teacher then later on an art curator or anthropologist. For a time before the birth of Coco I worked as an ceramic artist and that was always on the list as that is what my father does for a living...its changed many times.
What movie have you enjoyed? Book? And what food are you loving right now?
I loved Into The Wild. I also loved Benjamin Button and the Changeling. I loved loved loved the Time Traveler's Wife and also I have just re read Lolita to see if I feel the same way about it as I did at university or if its different (It is!). We read We Need To Talk About Kevin in my book club and I have to say that blew my mind.
I am trying to avoid too many carbs at the moment so I am enjoying nasi campur an Indonesian dish made up of rice (but without the rice), surrounded in lots of little tasty, spicy, vegetables and protein - can be fish, prawns, chicken, tofu or tempeh without the rice and with extra sambal. Better not forget to mention my husband who is a chef and all the wonderful meals he makes.

Reveal his hidden identity to the world with this cool Tee. More user friendly than a cape, less scary than a mask and able to save embarrassed Super Hero Mothers everywhere from undies on the outside shopping trips, this Tee is sure to become a fav in your little ones wardrobe. Add your hero's name and very own slogan like "I've Saved the Day" or "Watch me Space Off" to completely win over the super hero and their legion of fans. | |

| It may be that I’m a child of the 80s (and still have a thing for legwarmers - à la Flashdance), but last winters Oobi Baby legwarmers were the fashion must-have for my 9-month-old son Clancy. Reporting the purchase to friends, some thought I was taking a childhood revival just a little too far. Yeah, well… Who’s laughing now ladies? So, so practical and yet so incredibly funky, stripy leg warmers add some serious street cred to every ensemble (for boys and girls). On cold mornings, layer up with stockings, wear under jeans and dresses, or they’re perfect for those in-between autumn/spring days - put them under cargo shorts or skirts (and just strip ‘em off later when the sun kicks in). Too cute! Wasn’t long before everyone wanted a pair… (And the girls at child care loved them too – extra padding for crawlers, easier during toddler toilet training, and just plain good-looking!) | |

Oobi baby legwarmers are no longer available at Baby’s Got Style…check out their knee high socks, $8.95 a pair instead! |
